Land Speed Records
A
huge
stretch
of sandy beach is the ideal setting for the numerous land speed record
attempts that have been made here.
This beach is renowned for speed records with its vast beach it was the
perfect setting for
Malcolm Campell's record of 175
miles per hour (the last to be achieved on British soil).
In
1927 J.G.Parry Thomas was killed in his car Babs which
overturned and Parry Thomas died instantly.
Local people buried what was
left of the car in the sand, but in 1969 Babs was excavated and is
now fully restored.
More recently how ever we have seen the
uk electric land speed record set by
Bluebird Electric 2 car set in June,2002
when Don Wales achieved a speed of 137mph, beating his previous record of
116 mph. Don Wales is the grandson of record
breaker Sir Malcolm Campbell and nephew of Donald Campbell, who set numerous
land and water speed records.
So why not make Pendine Laugharne South Wales your next holiday.
It may be just the break you have been looking for.
